Baja might just be Mexico’s most underrated destination right now – a wild, sprawling peninsula to the west of the country that takes over 24 hours to drive from top to bottom. Our Director of Sales, José Pineda, and Product Development Manager, Karina Espinoza Huet, just got back from some boots on the ground relentless exploration; crisscrossing deserts, coasts, and towns, and building relationships with people who know this extraordinary part of Mexico most intimately. We’ve crafted our dream itinerary – one that unlocks the real Baja, beyond Los Cabos, and how best to experience it: the hidden pockets, the life-changing wildlife encounters, and the cultural gems you’d never stumble upon alone. Here’s five reasons why Baja should be next on your list.

1. The Unique Landscapes: Are We Still on Earth, or Somewhere Else Entirely?

At Journey Mexico, we love to explore deeper. Few places embody this spirit more than Baja: a fascinating world of contrasts, not quite like anywhere else in Mexico, and not quite like anywhere else on Earth for that matter. It is a rare meeting point of desert, ocean, biodiversity, and cultural frontiers, offering raw wilderness and a spirit all its own that you can’t quite put your finger on. Geographically isolated, the peninsula juts out into the Pacific, with one coastline facing the open ocean and the other cradling the life-rich Sea of Cortez. This dual geography breeds extremes: rugged mountains and cactus-studded deserts sliding down into turquoise bays, marine sanctuaries teeming with whales, dolphins, and sea lions. The result is a place that feels remote and untamed, where vast landscapes at times “feel like Mars,” as José puts it. More than just an end-of-the-world energy, it feels entirely otherworldly, with long stretches of empty beaches, dirt tracks leading to secret surf breaks, and night skies painted with a million stars. Our passion is to bring guests to places that feel raw and untouched yet deliver them with seamless comfort. Out here, life follows its own rhythm, with a distinct cultural identity rooted in the natural world – fishermen haul in the day’s catch, families and friends gather over local dishes cooked with heart, and vaqueros, or cowboys, still ride across the plains, kicking up clouds of dust as they travel with their mules.

2. Nature in Full Force: Come Face to Face with Majestic Whales

Those same extremes that characterize Baja’s landscape are also what make it such a vibrant hub of biodiversity; with extraordinary opportunities for encounters that will take your breath away. While Baja’s wildness offers many wonders, it is perhaps most revered for its whales: each year, around 20,000 gray whales make the journey from the Arctic to Baja’s lagoons, making this one of the best spots on the planet for observing the gentle giants. Feel this migration vividly at San Ignacio, where glamping comes with a Journey twist – luxury tents set right on the water’s edge, complete with plush double beds, cozy lounge areas, and thoughtful details like patterned rugs and chandeliers that bring hotel-style comfort into the wild. Enjoy days spent out on the water meeting these astonishingly social creatures, and nights unfolding under pristine, star-filled skies, sharing family-style meals that turn strangers into friends. Over in the sheltered bay of La Paz, revel in the rare chance to swim and snorkel alongside the world’s largest fish – the whale shark – guided by local experts whose lifelong connection to these waters makes the experience even more meaningful.

“It’s not just about luxury – it’s special because it’s authentic. Not just the magnificent whales, but the people, the guides, the shared moments. Everything about it feels rare and meaningful.” – José Pineda, Director of Sales, Journey Mexico

At Journey Mexico, we believe there’s something truly special about experiencing a place through its nature. These momentary encounters – watching a gray whale nudge her calf beside your boat, or swimming eye-to-eye with a whale shark – connect you to millions of years of evolution, yet in your very own once-in-a-lifetime moment. It inspires awe and joy in equal measure, but, we think, also stirs something deeper: a sense of responsibility to protect these extraordinary places for the future.

3. Experiences Rooted in Place: Generations of Tradition

Baja is also about the people whose lives and traditions are deeply woven into the land – and sea. Connection runs deep: in the vineyards, in the fishing villages, and in kitchens where recipes are rich with generations of memory. In the Valle de Guadalupe (Mexico’s wine country tucked away in the mountains), it’s absolutely the bottles that make the region special, but just as much as the people behind them. Share a glass of wine with the eccentric and quick-witted owners of winery Clos de Tres Cantos, and in Santo Tomás, enjoy unique grape varieties you won’t find elsewhere, with small batches reserved only for local consumption. “Rather than chasing international awards, here it’s about savoring a glass in the place it was created” explains Karina; it’s about drinking in the traditions and passion of those who make it.

Taking to the seas at Ensenada’s Campo 7, step aboard a rustic vessel helmed by local fishermen. As stories flow in an authentic Spanglish mix, set sail in search of fish with an unpolished charm that offers a true glimpse into their way of life. The reward, aside from cooking and sharing your catch of the day (just as Baja’s communities have always done), is also the rare chance to connect with authentic fishermen in this local spot. Beyond the fishing boats, Baja’s food culture is thriving on land too, with a culinary scene that balances world-class flavor with generational roots. Take Doña Esthela’s beloved roadside spot back in the wine-rich Valle de Guadalupe: what began in 2008 as her humble burritos for local vineyard workers has grown into one of the most famous restaurants in the region, now proudly carrying a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand. The charm here is in its hearty, soulful cooking and generous spirit: fluffy corn hotcakes, gorditas stuffed with peppers and Mexican cactus, or the signature borrego tatemado – a slow-cooked lamb dish drawing visitors back time and again. With heavy wooden tables and boisterous crowds, it embodies the care and generosity characteristic of Baja’s gastronomy; and if the lines out of the door weren’t proof enough, visits from the likes of Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay surely should be.

Building relationships with the people behind the places is in the Journey DNA. Over decades of exploring every corner of the country, we’ve forged connections that open doors to the most authentic experiences – those you don’t simply stumble upon, but are invited into. It’s this access that really ensures our travelers feel like special guests in Baja, rather than tourists – truly welcomed into its living traditions.

4. Raw Energy: Tijuana’s Cultural Frontier

Tijuana is a border town stepping boldly into a new era, and we see it as one of the most exciting cultural frontiers in the country. Once overlooked, it’s now reimagining itself with a raw, lived-in energy – “not necessarily polished or pretty, but rustic, authentic, and full of life” José tells us. This is a city where knowing where to go (and when) makes all the difference, and that’s exactly the kind of discovery we love to unlock for our guests. The culinary scene is the perfect example. Tacos and food trucks set the tone, but layered on top are specialty coffee roasters, bakeries, and concept-driven eateries, each carrying its own personality. One of our favorite spots to take travelers is La Telefonica – a cultural park where food stalls, craft breweries, and DJs create an atmosphere that’s vibrant, youthful, and distinctly Tijuanense. Over in the Colonia Cacho neighborhood, we’ve uncovered modern cafés and pastry spots that embody the city’s reinvention, places you might not find without the insider guidance.

This is how we love to get to know a place: exploring like a local, understanding what makes it tick, identifying the essentials to dip into – the ones that reveal Tijuana’s essence beneath the surface. It’s no wonder Anthony Bourdain stopped by here too, to spotlight its food scene, and today, the energy he sensed has only grown. We delight in sharing it with travelers who want to really experience the city.

5. La Paz: Mexico’s Best-Kept Secret

Further down on the southern tip of the peninsula, there’s a feeling that you’ve stumbled upon something undiscovered in the region’s capital La Paz – a city alive with local energy yet still distinctly under the radar. There’s a sense that you’ve arrived just before it all “blows up”, when the cool new restaurants are opening, the sunsets are still a local secret, and discovery is part of the fun. Just the kind of insider scoop we love to bring to our guests.

By day, La Paz hums with life. Even on a weekday, the malecón (the beachfront promenade) fills with families, fishermen, and joggers against a backdrop of aquamarine sea. Just outside the city, Balandra Bay stuns with calm turquoise waters framed by dramatic desert hills – a place where you can swim, paddle, or hike rugged trails to take in surreal views before watching the sun melt into the horizon – the sunsets here are a must see. And when night falls, the city comes alive in a different way. La Paz’s culinary scene is blossoming with inventive concepts and new restaurants that balance ambition with an honesty of service that feels refreshingly real. It may not be polished, but it’s heartfelt – maybe the chef will bring your plate to the table and stay for a chat.

La Paz doesn’t shout for attention, and that’s exactly its charm. It’s a place that rewards those who take the time to look a little closer.

After our time on the peninsula, one thing is clear: Baja continues to blow us away. From whale encounters and desert horizons to rustic food stalls and authentically Mexican vineyards, it’s a place that surprises at every turn. But what makes it so special is the way all of these elements combine. Karina put it best: “this is a place rich in so many ways – a combination of the people, the nature, and the remoteness. A feeling that is unique to Baja… Very unique.”
